Are you lesbian or gay and Catholic? So are we! by Tony Regan

Come and join us on the fourth Sunday every month at Historic St. John's Church, 2600 Church St., Cleveland, one block south of Detroit Ave. and one block west of West 25th St.

Dignity is a group of lesbians and gay men who are Catholic and who want to remain within the Catholic Church. Our Catholicism is one of the most important aspects of our living, and of our spiritual growth and development. To rejoice in being both Catholic and lesbian and gay is one of the main reasons for Dignity; to remain Catholic and lesbian and gay fills us with joy and dignity.

With the seasons of Advent, Christmas, the New Year and finally the Epiphany long since gone we find ourselves well into 1992 and looking forward to this new year with enthusiasm and hope. January saw the Dignity-Cleveland chapter with two events which were both exciting and fulfilling.

The first event of 1992 was a gathering of Dignity members for Mass at St. Malachi's church on Sunday January 6, followed by an enjoyable brunch at Miracles Restaurant. We men next at St. John's on January 26 when one of our members gave an interesting and insightful presentation on the role of 'Women in Dignity'.

As I said in the January issue, women play an enormous part in the spiritual growth of all of us and have been greatly involved in the laity within the Catholic Church. We in Dignity are more aware of this than most people and women have an equal and important role to play in our organization. This proved to be so true and

our look at "women's role" was beneficial for me and many others and gave us greater insight into how we as a group of people can be both supportive and enriching for each other.

Our February social evening will be held at Free Space on February 11 when we shall watch a movie. Free Space is on Franklin Ave. behind C/O Video. Our winter picnic is to be held on February 23. We hope to plan a mass or prayer service, followed by dinner and some games or just a walk in the country. The cost of this will be $3.00, more if you can or less if you can't. If you plan to come to either of these events please call 651-1631 or 631-6580 for further details. Our March calendar will consist of a night at the Theater in early March and a "Lenten Retreat" late in March. Details will be announced.

On the Liturgical Calendar, March 4 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. (Seems strange to be thinking of Lent and Easter already with Christmas only a few weeks past!) Many of us will be "doing something different," or "giving something up" for Lent. I was thinking about this recently and was discussing it with two friends of mine who recently returned from a trip to Metagoria. Part of what they told me was that during Our Lady's visits to that place she spoke to the people and reminded them to say the Rosary, in fact she pleaded with them to pass on this request to others in the world. It seems to me that every time Our Lady has appeared anywhere, be it Lourdes in France, Knock in Ireland or Fatima in Portugal she has repeatedly asked for people to pray the Rosary. It dawned on me that perhaps this would be a "different thing" for me to practice during the season of Lent and to be sure the only thing I would be "giving up" is some of my time. I wanted to pass these thoughts on and to share my feelings about Lent with my brothers and sisters in Dignity.

I'm looking forward to seeing some more of you this coming spring and summer in the meantime God's blessings. In Christ's Love
